The first XI contains six players from the Premier League, two from the Championship, two from League One and one from League Two so represents the men most likely to provide value and make a big difference at their respective levels.

Goalkeeper – Hugo Lloris (Lyon to Tottenham, £7.9million)

It wasn’t a vintage deadline day for goalkeepers switching clubs and we certainly reckon this deal provides more long-term potential than Richard Wright’s move to Manchester City! The 25-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane with a big reputation after Champions League experience with Lyon and 38 full international caps for France. He has his work cut out to knock Brad Friedel out of the first XI – at least initially – but expect him to succeed given time and stay between the sticks for Spurs for years to come.

Right-back – Paul Caddis (Swindon to Birmingham, loan)

It was all so good for Caddis at Swindon last season as he captained the Robins to the League Two title. The defender was expected to be a key part of a side which can challenge for back-to-back promotions but it wasn’t to be and now his future is at St Andrew’s. A row with boss Paolo Di Canio “got out of control” in the words of chairman Jeremy Wray and the Blues nipped in. Lee Clark has done a good bit of business and boosted his defence for the Championship campaign.

Centre-back – Roman Golobart (Wigan to Tranmere, loan)

Tranmere currently sit proudly at the top of League One and this signing can only provide their fans with further cheer. The 20-year-old Spaniard was hugely impressive during his time on loan in the Scottish Premier League with Inverness last term and did enough to win Caley Thistle’s supporters’ Player of the Season award. Expect Wigan boss Roberto Martinez to take note if he can enjoy a similarly impressive spell at Prenton Park.

Centre-back – Dale Bennett (Watford to AFC Wimbledon, loan)

It’s fair to see that a team that has conceded 11 goals in their previous two games could do with signing a defender. That was the case for AFC Wimbledon and they moved to boost their backline with the loan acquisition of Bennett from Watford. The defender was praised by boss Terry Brown for his display in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Dagenham – a result that has to go down as an improvement – and provides steel to the Dons.

Left-back – Bryan Oviedo (FC Copenhagen to Everton, undisclosed)

Oviedo provides options in defence and midfield to give yet another boost to Everton in what was a very impressive transfer window. The Costa Rican has forged his reputation during a successful spell at FC Copenhagen, with Danish league and cup glory on his CV. The 22-year-old might take a little while to adapt to the Premier League but expect David Moyes to have another major asset on his hands when he does.

Right-midfield – Clint Dempsey (Fulham to Tottenham, undisclosed)

Dempsey would have got in this team no matter where he ended up on deadline day. It wasn’t to be for Aston Villa and Liverpool but Tottenham are smiling after securing the deal for a fee reported to be £6million. The USA international bagged 60 goals during his time at Fulham and still has a few more in him for his new employers. Expect the 29-year-old to give Spurs a boost after a sluggish start to the season.

Central-midfield – Steven Nzonzi (Blackburn to Stoke, £3.5million)

Where were you when Nzonzi joined Stoke? Most likely tucked up in bed as we got the confirmation through in our office at 0148 on Saturday morning. The midfielder had fallen out of favour at Blackburn but his quality in the Premier League has already been shown and this move will work out well for all parties. Expect his price to shoot up over the next couple of years.

Central-midfield – Stephane Mbia (Marseille to QPR, undisclosed)

You won’t find many QPR fans who were unhappy to see Mbia arrive at Loftus Road as Joey Barton left for the south of France. The midfielder had a reputation as one of the best in his position in Ligue 1 and his arrival completed a busy transfer window for Rangers. Mark Hughes has added 12 new faces to his ranks with Mbia looking like one of the most impressive.

Left-midfield – Gaston Ramirez (Bologna to Southampton, undisclosed)

This is a signing that should excite everyone who enjoys Premier League football. The Uruguayan has provided some magic moments during his time in Serie A with Bologna and will bring a real X Factor to the newly-promoted Saints. Liverpool and Tottenham were just two of the other sides to be linked with the playmaker so you can’t argue with Nigel Adkins when he is the deal shows “a lot of ambition”.

Striker – Stuart Beavon – (Wycombe to Preston, undisclosed)

Preston boss Graham Westley is right when he says “patience has been a virtue” in the chase for Beavon. North End had to wait throughout the summer before completing a deal for the striker and he has already shown his class with a goal in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Preston. The 28-year-old bagged 28 goals last season and now has his chance to shine in League One again after making the step back up.

Striker – Billy Sharp (Southampton to Nottingham Forest, loan)

Sharp has already enjoyed plenty of success with Forest boss Sean O’Driscoll during the time the pair spent together at Doncaster. Expect the 26-year-old to be back amongst the goals now he is back up north and in the Championship alongside his former gaffer. Southampton have boosted their attacking options but it was still a surprise to see the former Sheffield United man depart. Forest have made the deal happen and will benefit.
