Liverpool are becoming concerned that Manchester City have registered firm interest in Thiago Alcantara and are willing to pay more to sign him, according to a report.
Speculation in recent months has claimed the Reds are keen on the Bayern Munich midfielder. Manager Jurgen Klopp is particularly a fan, having seen his Borussia Dortmund side face the Spaniard.
However, further reports claim Liverpool are unwilling to spend more than €30million (£27million) for Thiago.
And while SPORTbild says Bayern would not dismiss such an offer, City have entered proceedings with more spending power.
The German newspaper claims City are “offering more” than Liverpool, with boss Pep Guardiola also keen.
Guardiola brought Thiago to Bayern from Barcelona in 2013 and is fully aware of the midfielder‘s attractive qualities. Indeed, City are looking for a long-term replacement for the outgoing David Silva.
City have immediately begun to show their financial prowess once more since winning their legal battle with UEFA.
Guardiola has recruited former Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake for £41million. What’s more, the deal for winger Ferran Torres will likely rise from its starting point of around £20million.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have shown reluctance to spend so far this transfer window. Klopp has reiterated that stance on several occasions, but the club have also demonstrated such a reluctance.
Liverpool backed away from a deal for Timo Werner owing to his reported £50million release clause. More recently, the Reds moved on from Jamal Lewis after Norwich informed them of the left-back’s £20million valuation.
SARR SPEAKS OUT ON LIVERPOOL RUMOURS
Meanwhile, another player Liverpool are reportedly targeting is Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.
The Senegal international sunk Klopp’s men to their first Premier League defeat this season. What’s more, he shares a strong relationship with Senegal team-mate Sadio Mane.
Now, Sarr has spoken out about the prospect of moving to Anfield.
