Wright worried for Arsenal as he makes revealing Aubameyang prediction

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has admitted that striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameuyang “deserves” to be fighting for league titles and for Champions League winners’ medals.

Aubameyang has been in fine form for the Gunners this season having scored 20 goals in 32 appearances, but a poor start under former boss Unai Emery has made their chances of qualifying for top European football next term slim.

Mikel Arteta has turned Arsenal’s fortunes around, with the club suffering only one defeat in 2020, although that result saw them dumped out of the Europa League by Olympiacos.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Wright explained how Aubameyang should not be criticised if he decides to move elsewhere this summer.

“If you can imagine him in a better team, he would be winning Premier Leagues and vying for places in Champions League finals and I think he deserves that,” the pundit said.

“You don’t see him particularly vocal on the pitch, [no] pointing and screaming, but it’s what he does in respect of his leadership with the goals that he scores.

“If you take his goals out of that team then they’re in a massive heap of trouble. Arsenal need a few more players to kick in with their form to help him.”

Aubameyang will have one year left on his deal at the end of the season and his future has been subject to intense speculation.

“We’re talking about a goalscorer who is scoring at the rate of a Champions League player, a world-class goalscorer,” Wright said.

“We’re talking about the last big contract in his career. I just hope that the love that he has for the club and the fans have for him is enough for him but I wouldn’t want to be in his position because it’s a tough one for him.”

Arsenal were due to face Brighton in the Premier League this weekend but the match was postponed after Arsenal’s squad self-isolated following the news that Arteta had tested positive for coronavirus.

Indeed, the Premier League announced on Friday that the league has been postponed until April 4.
