Zlatan can be ‘phenomenal’ for the Premier League – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic can be “phenomenal” for Manchester United over the next two seasons and was pleased with what he saw from his side in the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.

Goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Ibrahimovic secured the win in Mourinho’s first Premier League game as the new United manager.

The Portuguese coach declared himself “happy” with the “intensity” of his side as they swept the Cherries aside.

“I am very happy. Bournemouth always start with great intensity but we kept our control. We weren’t surprised and then we started playing,” he said.

“In the second half we had a bit more confidence.

“But you make a mistake in the Premier League and you get punished [when Bournemouth scored]. Instead of going for a bigger result you have to try to control. We went for that and were always in control. I’m happy with the team.”

Mourinho was also full of praise for Ibrahimovic, who scored on his Premier League debut to wrap up the points for the Red Devils.

“It’s incredible how Zlatan Ibrahimovic has never won the Golden Ball. He wants to win the Premier League, not the Golden Ball,” the boss said.

When asked whether Rooney and the Swede were too similar, the 53-year-old replied: “Different times, different ages. Eric Cantona was here at the best moment in his career.

“This guy [Zlatan] is more than a player. For the next two seasons I think he can be phenomenal for the team and the Premier League.”
