Ibrahimovic hopes of Man Utd reunion ruined as injury hits Milan star

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Roma v AC Milan February 2021

AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss both legs of the Europa League clash with Manchester United through injury, reports say.

The Sweden legend went off during Milan’s 2-1 win over Roma on Sunday with an adductor issue.

According to ESPN, Rossoneri medics will only assess the problem in 10 days, when the first leg takes place.

However, it remains unclear whether Ibrahimovic will miss a return to Old Trafford next Thursday.

Coronavirus travel regulations have shifted matches across the continent. Indeed, Arsenal have played Benfica in Greece while Liverpool’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig went ahead in Budapest.

United, meanwhile, played Real Sociedad in Turin on their way to a 4-0 aggregate last 32 win last week.

Ibrahimovic, who continues to enjoy a stellar career at the age of 39, made United his stomping ground in 2016.

The forward signed from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2016 and won the Europa League and Carabao Cup under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.

In fact, he scored the winner in the League Cup final against Southampton.

He also netted five times as the Red Devils advanced to the Europa League final, but he missed the final stages of the tournament due to a long-term knee injury.

Despite advancing further towards 40 since leaving United, though, Ibrahimovic has not slowed down.

He has missed 10 Serie A games due to coronavirus and injury, but has managed 14 goals from 14 outings.

Overall, he has scored 16 times in 21 appearances this season with Milan second in Serie A, four points off leaders Inter.

Bruno Fernandes is one player who has proved typically vital in United’s own charge this season.

The 26-year-old has scored twice in the Europa League this term, including in the 4-0 win over Sociedad in Turin.

However, he struggled to match his best in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, attracting criticism from club legend Paul Scholes.
