Isak Bergmann Johannesson has admitted to being flattered at reported interest in him from Liverpool – but has stated his preference to play for their fiercest rivals instead.
Much of the focus about Liverpool’s potential transfer activity in January has been about signing a new defender to cover for the injured Virgil van Dijk.
However, a recent report suggested that they may not do so, instead favouring a long-term approach when looking for targets.
It appears that strategy applies to other positions as well. It has now emerged that they are monitoring 17-year-old winger Johannesson. who looks to have a bright future.
The son of former Premier League star Joey Gudjonsson, Johannesson has been earning rave reviews for IFK Norrkoping.
Already an Iceland U21 international, the winger has five goals from 29 games for his club to his name.
Such has been his form, that Liverpool have already earmarked the player as one for the future.
He was checked out by the Reds’ Scandanavian scout Mads Jorgensen during Monday’s 2-2 draw against AIK.
However, the teenager has spoken of his ambitions of playing for Manchester United instead. His father played for Aston Villa, Leicester, Burnley and Huddersfield. He was raised in Greater Manchester, while his father turned out for the Clarets and Huddersfield.
As such, he attended several United games as a youngster and now has ambitions to one day play for them.
Speaking of interest in him, the winger told Expressen: “My dream club is Manchester United, together with IFK Norrkoping.
“I lived in Manchester when I was a kid, and I watched a lot of games there. It’s great that Liverpool have been watching me.
“But I’ll just focus on helping Norrkoping get into Europe next season. We’re going to do it together.
“You can’t say that I am not going to Liverpool. They play good football – Manchester City and Liverpool have been great.
“But will I have the chance to move this winter? I’ll concentrate on Norrkoping – we have five games left to get a European place.”
Johannsesson value unknown
Norrkoping’s value of Johannesson has not been widely documented. However, prising him away should not present too many issues for the Premier League’s elite.
However, there is reportedly already a resignation among the Icelandic side that the teenager will soon be lured away.
Norrkoping chief scout Stig Torbjornsen said this week: “There has been a lot of interest in Bergmann Johannesson. It’s no secret that clubs are chasing him.
“Liverpool are one of the clubs, and there are ten others as well. The best clubs in Europe have been here for him.”
