Jurgen Klopp: Demands fighting spirit at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp insists he would only sign players with the right attitude for Liverpool, saying he only wants new arrivals who are “up for a fight”.

The German has already instilled an impressive team spirit at Liverpool since taking charge midway through the season, as exemplified by their dramatic comeback against his former club Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night.

Liverpool looked down and out at 2-0 down within 10 minutes, and trailed 3-1 with an hour played. But Philippe Coutinho, Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren struck to seal a stunning victory that shook the continent.

Klopp, who is expected to dip into the transfer market this summer, says he wants players who will go beyond the call of duty – as he did as a player.

“I was a fighting machine with a will of iron,” he told men’s lifestyle magazine The Red Bulletin.

“Anyone can have a good day but you have to be able to perform on a bad day.

“That’s what you live for as a sportsman. You have to put up a fight.

“If you are full of motivation as a player, if you are full of concentration I am open arms.

“If you are not, of course [I am hard] but only because to work with players who don’t understand the professional part of this life is a waste of time.

“I would never sign an a * ****** just because he’s great at football.”
