Inter Milan are continuing to monitor in-form Manchester United striker Anthony Martial, according to a report in Italy.
Calciomercato report that Inter lie waiting in ‘ambush’ for Martial, whose form since the restart of the Premier League has been excellent.
The outlet acknowledge the difficulty of the situation for Inter, who are believed to have admired Martial for a while. In fact the source claims “a couple of seasons” while Luciano Spalletti was in charge.
United sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter last summer and, per the source, Martial would be perfect for Antonio Conte’s style with the Nerazzurri.
Conte could be looking for a replacement for Lautaro Martinez this summer with the Argentine no.9 continually linked with a big-money move to Barcelona.
Martinez has a huge €111m release clause, although that was believed to have expired on July 7. Still Barca will have to pay big to get their hands on the talented attacker. Inter will then need a replacement.
That is where Martial apparently fits in. Not the first player you would think of as a natural successor, but one Inter are keen on. And they may have a plan to get the French striker, who is rated in the €70m bracket.
United are understood to have expressed an interest in Milan Skriniar. In fact Tuttosport claim United have ‘tabled a €65million (£58m) offer’ for the Slovakia international to match the bid on the table from Man City.
Skriniar swap deal?
With that in mind Inter could well try and strike a deal with Skriniar heading to Manchester and Martial moving in the opposite direction.
However, the difficulty of the deal is well documented, despite Martial remaining “a constant presence on the notebooks of the Inter market men”.
Martial, who has five goals and two assists in his last six games, has a contract until June 2024, with the option for another season.
“After the misunderstandings of the Mourinho era” Martial looks to be back to the exciting prospect that Louis van Gaal signed in 2015 for a fee which could eventually hit £58m.
A move away from Old Trafford this summer looks very unlikely, but if Solskjaer wants Skriniar, we may see just how highly he rates Martial.
