Reported suitors Arsenal and Leeds have been given hope of a deal for Glen Kamara after Finland coach Markku Kanerva urged the midfielder to ‘sign for a club bigger than Rangers’.
Kamara has enjoyed a superb season north of the border and played a leading role in the club securing their first Scottish title for 10 years. And while Kamara does have over two years remaining on his deal, Steven Gerrard wants him tied to a new contract.
However, with Kamara catching the eye with two solid displays for Finland at Euro 2020, Gers could face a fight to keep the star.
Firstly, it was claimed last month that Arsenal were readying an approach to re-sign their former academy star. With Mikel Arteta looking to remould his Gunners squad, Kamara is one player reportedly targeted by the Spaniard.
Kamara though is also a long-standing target for Leeds. Marcelo Bielsa is looking for midfield reinforcements this summer and Kamara may fit the bill. Premier League new boys Watford have also been linked with a move.
Now the pair’s hopes have been given a lift after Finland coach Kanerva hinted the star should try and force a move.
He told AFP: “Hopefully he will continue his development, it would be nice to see him playing even at bigger clubs.”
Kamara, however, appears settled at Ibrox and stated recently he wasn’t looking to move.
“I’m a Rangers player until told otherwise,” he told a Finnish podcast. “I’m not focused on anything else, it’s been really good (at Rangers).
“We just won the league unbeaten and had a good European run, so I’m not really focused on anything else. My focus is on Finland right now.
“The club’s on the up and everyone is looking forward to next season. We want to go and retain that title.”
Gerrard fears Kamara departure
Gerrard, asked if Gers planned to rush through the signing talks to stave off interest in the player, said: “I don’t know is the answer to your question. If it was my decision the answer would be yes.
“I’ve made my feelings known to Ross (Wilson, sporting director) and the board on that situation.
“Glen has been fantastic for me since day one. He’s grown and he’s evolved. He’s improved and he’s listened.”
Kamara is currently on a reported package worth just £6,200 a week. That’s the same deal he’s on since arriving for £50,000 from Dundee in January 2019.
