Wilshere insists he’s ‘not stupid’ in admission over potential Arsenal return

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says that returning to the north London club would be a “dream” after his recent fall from grace.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after West Ham terminated his contract in October.

As such, he has travelled to Dubai where he sent a social media post of his progress. He wrote (via the Daily Record): “Working hard in Dubai at the amazing Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex with the same hunger as always.”

Reports have indicated that Rangers are leading the race for his signature. Speaking to the ITV Football Football Show, however, Wilshere said that the Emirates Stadium would be an ideal next destination.

The midfielder said: “Listen, you never know. I’m an Arsenal man. There’s nothing, I’ve not spoken to anyone or anything but that would be the dream.

“I’m not stupid to know that there’s probably no chance of it happening but I’m an Arsenal man, I love the club and want to see the club do well.”

Wilshere made 198 appearances for Arsenal after signing his first professional contract in 2008.

However, injury problems blighted his progress on both domestic and international stages. As such, as well as struggling at Arsenal, he fell out of favour for England.

Wilshere then moved to West Ham in the summer of 2018. But his fitness issues continued and he agreed by mutual consent with West Ham to end his contract.

The former Three Lions international scored 14 goals and assisted 30 others for the Gunners. At West Ham, meanwhile, he 19 outings over two seasons.

Eriksen not an Arsenal target

Meanwhile, Arsenal will not pursue a January deal for Christian Eriksen, reports claim.

The 28-year-old was on the move last January, to Inter from Tottenham. But less than a year on, he already feels unsettled.

Previous speculation has claimed that Mikel Arteta could launch a raid, but the latest report claims otherwise.
