Jadon Sancho has admitted links with Manchester United over the summer went to his head and affected his performances at the start of this season.
The England winger was the subject of intense speculation as United look to prise him from Borussia Dortmund. In the end, Dortmund’s reluctance to shift on their €120m valuation ended United’s chances.
However, the saga dragged on throughout the summer window. And with that extended into the season’s start until October 5, Sancho’s form suffered as a result.
Indeed, the England man admits things were “difficult” for him seeing the constant speculation.
However, a winter break in the Bundesliga appears to have done Sancho good. He now has two in two since the resumption – and he has come clean on his struggles.
“Obviously this season has been very difficult for me personally,” the BVB star told the Bundesliga’s official website. “So I knew when I went away, I just focused on my game and came back raring to go.
“I’m working hard every day in training and on the pitch so I’m just happy to get my goals and assists.”
Dortmund interim boss Edin Terzic is also confident Sancho is on the right track again after a slow start to the season.
“It’s just small adjustments,” Terzic told ESPN after his side’s win at Red Bull Leipzig on Saturday. “Sometimes you have to accelerate on your first touch, don’t get the opponent into situations where he can create two-vs-ones.
“We spoke a lot but Jadon was always doing his best in the last weeks and months, but sometimes it’s like that.
“Players are not always performing on this level. He knew that. He stayed hungry and we tried to support him as a team. We tried to support him individually. It worked out well in the last three games. He scored three goals, and now three assists also. He’s in a good way to get into his best form.”
Louis Saha wants Man Utd to revive Sancho bid
Louis Saha has urged United to rekindle their interest in Sancho and Jack Grealish – but knows who he would pick if he could only sign one.
“It’s unfortunate Man Utd couldn’t get deals in place for Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho last summer because they are two amazing players,” Saha said.
“I know less about Grealish but I think he would have fitted perfectly into this team – but for me, I’m sorry, Sancho is just such an unbelievable player.
“He’s unpredictable, he’s such a great talent and if he was playing for United with Bruno Fernandes, you just know as a striker you’re going to score goals because of the two of those.
“Man Utd did miss out on the two of them in the summer, but hopefully they’ll have another chance to sign them soon.”
