Carragher reveals exact reasons Liverpool won’t touch Messi deal

Jurgen Klopp, Lionel Messi TEAMtalk

Jamie Carragher is adamant Liverpool are right to steer well clear of any deal for Lionel Messi after explaining why the transfer would not interest Jurgen Klopp.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has spent his entire trophy-laden career with Barcelona.

However, the Argentine has announced his intentions to leave the club.

This has, understandably, sparked plenty of speculation in his services.

Manchester City look to be leading the chase, but Manchester United have also been mentioned.

Premier League champions Liverpool have only been mentioned fleetingly. And those narrow chances were ended on Friday by Jurgen Klopp.

Asked if Liverpool wanted to sign him, Klopp said: “Yeah, who doesn’t want Messi in their team?

“But no chance. The numbers are absolutely not for us. But… good player!”

Sky Sports pundit Carragher has explained why he hopes to see Messi in the Premier League. However, he knows a move to Liverpool is out of the question.

“I hope so [on a Premier League move] I would love to see Messi in the Premier League,” Carragher said.

“I want to watch him, I want to analyse him. The obvious place, the only place he can really go [in England] is Manchester City.

“With the history he’s got with the manager [Pep Guardiola] and the financial clout the club have got.

“I don’t think Liverpool will go anywhere near that situation. Financially, number one, but also because the way Liverpool the play. City are more technical and that would suit Messi a bit more.

“But how you get that deal across the line with the figures involved, I’m not too sure. It’s mind-boggling.”

Kompany urges Messi to join City

Lionel Messi TEAMtalk

Former City skipper Vincent Kompany has also expressed his wish to see Messi sign for his old club.

He said: “It’d be incredible for City to have a player like him. He could help them take the next step by winning the Champions League.

“I know Guardiola’s way of thinking, so I can well imagine the two of them will still have a rapport.

“If Messi has decided to leave Barcelona then I can only respect his decision. Let’s be clear – as a City fan, I hope Messi joins them.”

Saturday’s Paper Talk, meanwhile, states that City have warned Barcelona about asking for any of their stars in exchange for Messi.
