Beckford explains why erratic Kiko Casilla must be axed by Leeds

Jermaine Beckford is adamant that Kiko Casilla should be dropped from the Leeds United starting line-up after his latest error against Brentford.

Casilla has established himself as first-choice goalkeeper at Leeds since arriving from Real Madrid last January, but the once-capped Spain international has made some costly errors with three mistakes leading to goals in his last three games.

The 33-year-old was also at fault during the Whites’ Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County last season and struggled against Birmingham City earlier this campaign.

The Spaniard should have done better for the first goal that Nottingham Forest scored at his near post last weekend.

Against Brentford at Griffin Park on Tuesday evening, Casilla failed to collect a routine back-pass from Leeds teammate Liam Cooper and let it roll under his foot, allowing Said Benrahma to score an easy goal.

Former Leeds striker and fan favourite Beckford believes that it is time that Casilla is dropped from the starting lineup.

The 36-year-old has also suggested that Casilla has started to get complacent as he has no competition for his spot in the team.

“Yes, I think so,” Beckford told Sky Sports when asked if Casilla should be dropped.

“Players should be playing on form and that’s something I’m a firm believer in.

“That mistake could have happened to anyone but if you look at the last six or seven games he has been well out of form.

“Maybe a little bit of complacency has snuck in because he got used to playing week in, week out regardless of whether he is pushing himself to the limit.”

The draw with Brentford means that Leeds are second in the Championship table with 56 points from 32 matches.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now six points behind leaders West Bromwich Albion and only lead third-placed Fulham on goal difference.

Leeds will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Bristol City at Elland Road in the Championship.
