Salzburg coach explains why Haaland is ‘incredible fit’ for Liverpool

RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch has detailed why his former striker Erling Haaland would be an “incredible fit” for Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Marsch worked with the 19-year-old striker with during the first half of the current season, in which Haaland scored 28 goals in just 22 appearances before sealing a move to Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.

The Leeds-born Norwegian international has settled in well to life in Germany, scoring 13 goals in 14 games in all competitions for his new club, form which has already seen him linked with a move away from the Black and Yellows despite having four years left to run on his contract.

The likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United have been heavily tipped to make offers for the highly-rated teenager, while Liverpool have been less frequently linked but are thought to hold an interest.

And Marsch believes a switch to Anfield would be a great move for Haaland, claiming his pace and attacking prowess would make him a success in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, Marsch said: “He is a very special talent and just when you take his speed, his explosiveness, his size, his power, his technical ability, finishing, he would immediately be in the upper echelon of players in the world.

“But then when you also consider his tactical intelligence, his motivation, his discipline, his desire to improve and grow, then the combination means you have something very unique. We are only scratching the surface of the potential for Erling.

“He will continue to do well at Dortmund and I’m not sure how long he’ll be there before it’s time for him to take the next step, but he has the potential to be one of the best players in the world, no doubt. It’s another player that Liverpool would be very lucky to have.

“It won’t be cheap, but he loves the explosive style of play and being in open spaces, running in behind defences and being aggressive.

“Just by theory, it fits the way Liverpool plays. He would be an incredible fit.”

Should Haaland complete a transfer to the Reds, he would have to compete with the like of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for a place in the forward positions.

Last week, Liverpool legend John Barnes claimed he would be capable of replacing Firmino, who has been a key part of Klopp’s plans since taking over in 2015.

However, it remains unclear whether the reigning European champions will make a formal bid given their current options and well publicised interest in RB Leipzig front man Timo Werner, while the financial impact of COVID-19 could also have an impact on any potential deal.
