Every word said as FSG chief John W Henry issues grovelling Liverpool apology

Liverpool’s principal owner John W Henry has issued a lengthy statement apologising for the “disruption” he caused over the banished European Super League.

Six Premier League teams followed six others across Europe on Sunday by announcing their bombshell intentions to form their own lucrative league. The move hit widespread condemnation from all corners of football, fans, pundits and governing bodies alike. As such, the plans came crashing down in a matter of hours on Tuesday, starting with Chelsea’s withdrawal.

Indeed, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool all followed suit.

The move has brought the clubs back onside with the Premier League, UEFA and the FA; the two former bodies threatened to expel the English teams from their competitions.

However, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said that Henry and Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns the Reds, have no way of coming back from their intentions.

Nevertheless, the Anfield club released Henry’s lengthy apology to supporters via Twitter.

Liverpool’s principal owner said: “I want to apologise to all the fans and supporters of Liverpool Football Club for the disruption I’ve caused over the past 48 hours.

“It goes without saying, but should be said, that the project put forward was never going to stand without the support of the fans. No-one ever thought differently in England.

“Over these 48 hours we were very clear that it would not stand. We heard you. I heard you. And I want to apologise to Jurgen [Klopp], to Billy [Hogan, Liverpool CEO), to the players and to everyone who works so hard at LFC to make our fans proud.

“They have absolutely no responsibility for this disruption. They were the most disrupted – and unfairly so. This is what hurts most. They love your club and work to make you proud every single day.”

Henry added that he will now work to rebuild the relationship between FSG and the fans.

Henry wants Liverpool trust back

“I know the entire LFC team has the expertise, leadership and passion necessary to rebuild trust and help us move forward,” he added.

“More than a decade ago when we signed up for the challenges associated with football, we dreamed of what you dream of and we’ve worked hard to improve your club.

“Our work isn’t done and I hope you’ll understand that even when we make mistakes, we’re trying to work in your club’s best interests.

“In this endeavour, I’ve let you down. Again, I’m sorry and I alone am responsible for the unnecessary negativity brought forward over the last couple of days.

“It’s something I won’t forget and shows the power the fans have today and will rightly continue to have.”

Liverpool fans promise made

Henry finished by making a promise to Liverpool fans over his work following the rise and fall of the controversial European Super League.

“If there’s one thing this horrible pandemic has clearly shown, it’s how crucial fans are to us in sport and in every sport. It’s shown in empty stadium. It’s been an incredibly tough year for all of us, virtually no-one unaffected,” Henry said.

“It’s important that the Liverpool football family remain intact, vital and committed to what we’ve seen from you globally with local gestures of kindness and support.

“I can promise you I will do whatever I can to further that. Thanks for listening.”

On the pitch, Liverpool return to action on Saturday, when they face Newcastle at Anfield.

Their top-four hopes were boosted on Tuesday, as Chelsea drew 0-0 with Chelsea.
