Jorginho makes frank admission on why Lampard wasn’t right for Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho believes former boss Frank Lampard took the job too soon and wasn’t ready for that level.

Lampard became Chelsea head coach in 2019 and guided the club to a top-four finish in his first season. However, things unravelled in his second season in charge. Despite spending more than £200m on players, Lampard was unable to get the best out of his strengthened Blues squad.

Hence, the club made the difficult decision to sack their legendary former midfielder in January. They don’t seem to be regretting it, as replacement Thomas Tuchel has got them back in top-four contention and has led them to the Champions League semi-finals.

Jorginho is one player to have benefitted from Tuchel’s arrival. He has completed 90 minutes in nine different Premier League matches under Tuchel, but only did so four times under Lampard in the first half of the season.

Now, the Italy international has spoken out against the original appointment of Lampard, claiming the leap from Derby County to Chelsea was too big.

Jorginho told ESPN Brasil: “Look, I’ll be really sincere here on Lampard. I believe, given he was a legend at the club, he skipped some steps necessary for learning before moving to a big club.

“He came to a club where he is a legend, without having experience at other clubs. I think he came too soon, skipped a few steps ahead and wasn’t ready for a job at this level, to be honest.”

Lampard has been out of work ever since his departure from Stamford Bridge. It remains to be seen what level of job he will take next.

Frank Lampard to Celtic would be 'interesting'

Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson believes Frank Lampard would be an "interesting" choice as the next manager in what he says is a crucial appointment for the club.

Jorginho, meanwhile, will be hoping to continue his resurgent form as Chelsea look to end the season strongly. Thereafter, a new contract at Stamford Bridge could be discussed.

His agent revealed earlier this month that talks would take place in a few months’ time over a new deal. Jorginho’s present contract runs until 2023.

There has been frequent talk of a return to Italy but it seems he is ready to commit his future to the west London outfit.

Another new deal in pipeline

Jorginho is not the only Chelsea star potentially set for a new contract. A recent report suggested one of their defenders has also become a priority negotiation.

There is interest in the player from La Liga, which is forcing Chelsea into action.
