Mourinho teases Tottenham fans over what to expect from Gedson Fernandes

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that new Tottenham signing Gedson Fernandes will make his debut at Watford this weekend.

The Portugal midfielder arrived on an 18-month loan, with a view to a permanent transfer, from Benfica this week and looks to face the Hornets at Vicarage Road as Spurs look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

Speaking about the young star ahead of the game, Mourinho said: “This weekend they can expect him to be involved, starting or not but for sure involved in the team. When you get players in January, normally it’s because you need. And we need. because we lost important players for long time so we need his contribution. Young player, yes, just arrived in a new country, yes, but at the same time has experienced of playing for a big club.

“Has played already big matches, for instance Bayern Munich and Galatasaray away in the Champions League. Europa League quarter-finals, so he’s used to a high level of stress, pressure, responsibility.

“He’s a kid that can play different positions in midfielder, even wide on the right if we need. We got him for his multi-functionality. He’s what I used to call a special loan. He’s not a three month loan and goodbyes. One-and-a-half year loan when he’ll have time to develop, and who knows if he doesn’t stay here for a number of years.”

Harry Kane (hamstring), Ben Davies (ankle), Tanguy Ndombele (hip) and Moussa Sissoko (knee) all remain on the sidelines for the clash against Watford, while Hugo Lloris is back in training but is not yet ready for a return to action.

Meanwhile, Tottenham and Arsenal have been handed a lift with the news that Getafe have made a centre-back target available for £22million.

Jose Mourinho and Mikel Arteta are both looking at defender Djene Dakonam as an option to bolster their leaky defences and it would appear that the 28-year-old could move this month.

The Togo international, who is more commonly known by just his first name, has forged a reputation as one of LaLiga’s top defensive stars and has been named in the Spanish top-flight’s Team of the Year for the past couple of campaigns.

Djene was accompanied by Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique in those composite teams of LaLiga’s best players and has the game to thrive in the Premier League. Read more…
