Mourinho told he’d be mad not to pounce on Chelsea star’s uncertainty

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho would be able to get the best out of Willian if he brought the Chelsea winger to North London, according to one pundit.

Willian has been an influential figure for Chelsea since moving to the club in 2013 but his future has been the subject of speculation this season.

Indeed, with his contract set to expire this summer, the Brazilian has revealed that he has been offered a two-year extension by Chelsea but that he wants three more years.

Elsewhere, Mourinho has struggled this season due to injuries to the likes of Harry Kane and Son-Heung min and he was heavily criticised for not signing another attacker in the January transfer window.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips raised the prospect of Mourinho bringing Willian in as a solution.

“Willian is a player that I like,” Phillips said. “I think he’s got great qualities, great attributes.

“At the end of the day, it’s whether or not he fits into Mourinho’s style and where he plays. Mourinho generally plays a 4-2-3-1, so you could certainly see Willian playing on the left or right and giving them a bit of quality.

“If they get him on a free and it isn’t too much money then go for it.”

Willian has scored seven goals and assisted six others in 37 appearances this term but Phillips added that the Brazilian still has a lot more to give.

“He’s been in and out the side at Chelsea, whereas if he goes to a side where he’ll play week in and week out, you will certainly see the best of Willian,” Phillips said.

“For me, he’s still got plenty to offer in the Premier League, and if Tottenham were to secure his services, I think that would be a good signing.”

In other news, Jermaine Jenas has had his say on what is going wrong at Tottenham under Mourinho’s stewardship.

Tottenham have lost five of their last six games, a run that has seen them knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League and fall behind in the race for a top-four spot.
