Arsenal have been tipped to rival Liverpool in the chase for Gelson Martins, claims a Sky Sports journalist.
Martins has cancelled his contract at Sporting Lisbon following attacks at the club’s training ground, and Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for him.
The Reds see Martins as an alternative to Nabil Fekir, after their bid for the Lyon playmaker fell through.
However, Dharmesh Sheth claims that Arsenal are ready to pounce for 23-year-old Martins as well.
He said on the Transfer Talk pordcast: “Gelson Martins – Arsenal are one of a numbers of clubs who are going to be interested.
“(He’s) a speedy winger at Sporting Lisbon. He made a move with four others players to terminate his contract citing a ‘just cause’.
“Gelson Martins might have got €30m, €40m, €50m in a transfer fee. If the contract is ripped up a player of his quality, a Portugal international, could leave for free.
“Hence why what we’re hearing out Arsenal’s financial situation and how much they’ve got to spend, he would fit perfectly.”
Unai Emery has already strengthened his defence with the addition of Stephan Lichtsteiner and impending arrival of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and now could be looking to bring new bodies in further up-field as he begins his Arsenal reign.
Martins was an unused substitute in Portugal’s 3-3 World Cup draw with Spain on Friday.
