Klopp puts dampener on Liverpool transfer plans amid Thiago talk

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp concedes it is unlikely his side will spend much, if anything, in the transfer window this summer.

The German steered the Reds towards a first domestic league title in 30 years this season and the club are riding a wave. Talk of a statue in his honour has been played down, however.

Klopp is, however, pressing forwards with plans for next season and has been strongly linked with Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcanata.

As per Sport, “negotiations are very advanced between the player and club and only the economics have to be worked out between the two sides”.

And with Bayern Munich admitting Thiago will leave this summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal, those rumours have gathered some serious pace.

However, Klopp is not so sure and has put a major dampener on talk that Liverpool will spend big this summer.

He also expects many of their title rivals to spend far more.

He said: “Are there players out there on the market who could help us as well? Probably, yes.

“This is the challenge for us, to improve a really good football team.

“But the time is a challenge as well. Nobody knows exactly what the future will hold for us, for all of us, so how can we make really expensive decisions about how we will deal with it?

“This team is how it is but that doesn’t mean we will not strengthen, we don’t want to strengthen.

“If we have to and we have the opportunity and we have the financial resources then it will always happen and we will always try.

“But at the moment it’s really, really a difficult time. This team makes pressure on each other by themselves internally. Training quality is really important and high.

“This is a difficult year for all football clubs in the world and I don’t think it’s a time where we talk about transfers like the rest around us did not happen.

“It’s just not possible, at least not for us. We cannot do it like this, other clubs maybe can, but this club is [operating] in a specific way.

“This is our way, here we are. Is it the best way? I don’t know, but it’s ours and we will probably stick to that.”

Jose Enrique questions Thiago transfer

Jose Enrique has warned Klopp that he could be making a serious blunder in trying to bring Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool.

Klopp is said to be a “long-time admirer” of the Spain midfielder from his time as Borussia Dortmund boss.

However, Enrique – who played for Liverpool between 2011-2016 – isn’t convinced.

Enrique fears the player’s age and his lack of Premier League experience could prove a costly blunder.

“If they get him definitely he’s going there because Klopp has called him and told him he’ll start,” Enrique told Stadium Astro. “He’s 29 already. The Premier League is not the same, he’s never played there.

“I believe he will be a very good player but how much do you want to spend on this player? For how many years is he going to perform in your team? That’s what you have to look at as well.

“I’m not sure it would be the best fit. But he’s an unbelievable player, there’s no doubt about that.

“And he would make the starting line-up. For me, he’d make the starting line-up.”
