Juventus’ CEO Beppe Marotta has revealed they are “monitoring the situation” regarding Liverpool midfielder Emre Can.

The Germany midfielder has been in fine form for Jurgen Klopp’s men in early season, but he is yet to agree a new contract at Anfield.

Marotta discussed Juve’s transfer campaign with Calciomercato in an exclusive interview in Milan and when asked if Can was still a huge transfer target for Juve, he said: “Emre Can is a great player, I don’t know if he will sign a new contract, we will definitely monitor the situation.”

In June it was reported that Can was poised to sign a new £100,000 a week contract with Liverpool, according to a report.

Can was believed to have been offered a a new four-year deal, that will tie him to Anfield until 2021. The 23-year-old currently earns around £55,000 a week and his new deal will almost double his existing contract which expires in June 2018 and take him up to the levels of the Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino, who both earn around £100,000 a week.

However, the player is yet to put pen to paper and may well have had his head turned by Juventus after Marotta earlier this week declared an interest in the player.

“Liverpool are holding on tight to Emre Can,” Marotta told Premium Sport.

“His contract expires in June, we’ll be able to negotiate with him from January. We won’t hide the fact we like him.”

Asked whether the Leonardo Spinazzola could be Juve’s last summer signing, Marotta added: “It’s hard to tell. We promised Atalanta he would have stayed there for one more season. I am sorry for the player because it was a good chance for him.”

Marotta also ended the talk of Chelsea signing Alex Sandro and declared he was happy with Juve’s business: “Yes I am because we must rate the transfer market of each team considering the players a club sign and the players a club don’t sell.

“Just look at [Chelsea target] Alex Sandro and other players. We managed to fill the woes created by certain sales and we strengthen the team on the wings. We used to have a great team and we still have an amazing team. We lost the Champions League final but we reached it.”
