Juventus want Spurs duo as Inter make rival bid for defensive ace

Juventus and Inter Milan are both trying to sign Toby Alderweireld on a free transfer when his Tottenham contract expires, claims a report.

Alderweireld is entering the final year of his contract, and was heavily linked with a move to Serie A over the summer, but Roma could not agree a fee for him, eventually turning to Chris Smalling – who has since suggested he won’t return to Manchester United when his loan ends.

Now, the Daily Mail claim that Italian rivals Juventus and Inter will go head-t0-head for the defender – with both apparently interested in Christian Eriksen too.

Juventus were active in the free transfer market this summer, signing Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot after their contracts at Arsenal and PSG respectively expired, and Daily Mail writer Alvise Cagnazzo now claims they are set to look at free agents again.

Both Alderweireld and Eriksen will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement in January, with the Serie A champions holding an interest in both.

With previous reports saying Inter were plotting to swoop for Eriksen in January, Cagnazzo says that they are also keeping tabs on Alderweireld, having contacted his representatives recently in the hope of agreeing a deal soon.

Juventus also have a strong interest in the 30-year-old due to the recent injury to Giorgio Chiellini, who will now miss most of the season, with retirement even suggested as a possibility for the Italian veteran.

Alderweireld could also replace Daniele Rugani, with the report claiming Arsenal and Wolves are still interested in the Italian after missing out on him this summer.

Earlier reports had suggested that Spurs were hoping to tie the duo down to new contracts, with a double-your-money offer being made to Alderweireld and with a €7.5m salary being prepared for Eriksen, but the Dane has repeatedly admitted to being open to a new challenge.
