Report reveals three-man shortlist to solve Liverpool defensive crisis

A three-man shortlist of Bundesliga centre-halves who could be readily available in January has been drawn up following the latest spate of bad injury news for Liverpool.

The Reds were rocked today with the announcement that Joe Gomez has suffered a seemingly serious knee injury while on England duty.

The hammer blow was confirmed by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, with the early prognosis an ominous sounding one.

Liverpool’s resources at centre-back were already stretched, with Dutch colossus Virgil van Dijk already ruled out for the duration of the season.

Fabinho had deputised ably in Van Dijk’s absence, though he too succumbed to injury in late October.

The Brazilian could return to action following the international break. But with two of their three senior recognised centre-halves facing lengthy spells on the sidelines, speculation has begun to swirl over who Jurgen Klopp will target in the upcoming transfer window.

A host of names have already been touted, with a recent report noting a potential £45m target’s reluctance to sign a new contract with his current club.

Now, British newspaper The Daily Express have compiled a three-man shortlist of centre-halves who could solve The Reds’ injury crisis in January.

The first name is Schalke youngster Ozan Kabak.

Despite being just 20 years of age, the Turkey international already has over 40 Bundesliga appearances to his name.

Recent reports detailed a potential boost in Liverpool’s pursuit of the star who has frequently been linked with the Anfield club.

The Express cite Italian outlet Calcio Mercato who claim a fee of around £22.8m would be enough to seal a deal.

Secondly, fellow Bundesliga star Dayot Upamecano is explored.

The Frenchman, 22, has risen to prominence with RB Leipzig, and many believe a switch to a European powerhouse is a mere formality.

His recent performance against Man Utd drew stinging criticism from Rio Ferdinand, but interest in Upamecano will remain high.

The article reveals the player has a £38m release clause that comes into effect in the summer of 2021, meaning Liverpool would have to pay over the odds to fast-track a transfer in January.

Bayern veteran completes Liverpool list

The final name touted is Bayern Munich veteran David Alaba.

At the other end of the age spectrum at 28, the reformed centre-half would provide an instant impact.

The Austrian’s contract in Bavaria expires in the summer. However, if Liverpool are to complete a winter raid, a fee in the region of £30m would be required according to the report.

Meanwhile, Alisson becker has dropped a surprise name after detailing who he believes is Liverpool’s most important player.
