Kai Havertz bags are packed as Bayer boss makes Chelsea admission

Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz will complete a move to Chelsea this week after a telling admission from Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz.

After months of negotiations, Chelsea agreed a deal with Leverkusen to sign the exciting attacking midfielder. The Blues will pay £72million up front, with a further £18million in add-ons.

Indeed, that agreement came after the German side rejected the Blues’ earlier – and lower – bid.

The 20-year-old has quickly developed into becoming one of Europe’s most promising attacking talents.

The Blues have been chasing his signature over the past few months, and recently got the greenlight from owner Roman Abramovich.

Our exclusive story last week provided the inside scoop on the prospective club-record deal.

Now a deal is now reported to be close with the midfielder missing Bayer Leverkusen’s pre-season fitness tests. Bild believes the deal will go through in a matter of days. His bags are packed ahead of the move.

Bosz also confirmed Bayer had seen the last of the midfielder when assessing his absentees.

“Kevin Volland and the national players didn’t participate today in training today,” Bosz said at his press conference.

“Leon Bailey also wasn’t there. Unfortunately our squad isn’t set yet.”

Asked about upcoming sales, Bosz added: “I don’t expect Volland (set to join Monaco) and Havertz to train with us again.

“It’s possible more players will transfer and we definitely still have to add some players.”

Bosz added: “As a coach, it would be great if the squad was complete at the start of pre-season. But these days that’s hardly ever the case.

“Much has changed due to the pandemic and that makes things more complex.

“It’s my responsibility as a coach to deal with it.”

Chelsea to launch goalkeeper bid

Once a deal for Havertz has gone through, Chelsea will switch their focus to signing a new goalkeeper.

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s erratic form over the last two seasons has seen him lose his place in the side. It’s also led to speculation linking Chelsea to several big-money replacements.

Petr Cech

Assessing  Chelsea’s intentions, Petr Cech admitted the Blues hadn’t finished spending yet this summer.

“Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable,” Cech told Sport.cz.

“But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.

“Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.

“But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.”
