Kalvin Phillips talks resume as star edges closer to new Leeds deal

Leeds are hoping to soon announce that star midfielder Kalvin Phillips has signed a new deal after talks were held with his agent on Sunday.
The 23-year-old midfielder was the subject of serious interest from Aston Villa this summer with Dean Smith’s side seeing an approach in excess of £20m approach rejected by United.
The player was deemed too important to sell by Marcelo Bielsa, with the homegrown star a vital cog in the way Leeds play under the Argentine.
And while Phillips was happy to reject the approach, despite knowing he could look to quadruple his wages with a move to the Premier League, the player is looking for a new deal at Elland Road that would see him earn parity with the club’s top earners in Kiko Casilla and Patrick Bamford.
Now a report via Football Insider claims talks between Phillips’ agent and Leeds will continue this week, with the club looking to finally strike an agreement over the player’s future.
According to the report, Phillips is seeking a new five-year contract at Elland Road, which could yet be reviewed in the future should Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League this season.
The Yorkshire Evening Post also claims Phillips’ representative, former Leeds player Kevin Sharp, claims the possibility of an agreement on a contract extension looks “very promising”.
“It’s clear for all to see that the owner, Victor Orta and the manager all see Kalvin as a major player in the squad,” he continued.
“No matter how important he is, they want to get the best deal possible and I want to get him the best deal possible.
“Kalvin is really happy to stay and wants to sign a new deal.
“We had a very amicable meeting, we all came out very positive.
“It looks very promising, that’s as much as I can say.”
Leeds managing director Angus Kinnear confirmed the club’s desire to retain the midfielder’s services earlier this summer when he stated: “Kalvin is part of the plan. We are talking about a new contract. We want him to play in the Premier League for Leeds United.”
Bielsa’s side top the embryonic table after claiming four wins from their opening five games; an identical record as they had at the same stage last season.
