Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has an £80million alternative option in place if Antoine Griezmann snubs a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Atletico Madrid forward is United’s number one strike target but if a bid fails for the France international, Mourinho will reportedly turn his attention to Tottenham’s prolific hitman Harry Kane.
United are reportedly ready to pay the £85million release clause in Griezmann’s contract, while it is also hoped that Red Devils midfielder Paul Pogba could play a part in persuading his international colleague to make the huge move to Old Trafford.
However, should those attempts fall through then the Daily Star claims that Mourinho will set his sights on England striker Kane instead.
The 23-year-old only signed a new deal at White Hart Lane earlier this season but that won’t stop United testing the resolve of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, especially given that Wayne Rooney is likely to leave this summer and Zlatan Ibrahimovic has still to agree to an extension of his 12-month contract at Old Trafford.
Despite selling the club’s top assets in the past, Levy would certainly play hardball over any potential Kane exit – particularly as he sees the in-form frontman as the face of the club as they prepare to move into their stunning new stadium in 2018-19.
Spurs are have also been challenging for the Premier League title in the last two seasons and it could cause a revolt among the fans if another one of the club’s top assets was sold again, as Gareth Bale was when he moved to Real Madrid in 2013.
