Kasper Schmeichel talks sense after reacting to Alisson clanger

Kasper Schmeichel has revealed his sympathy for opposite number Alisson after his clanger at the weekend.

The Leicester No. 1 was asked his thoughts on the new Liverpool top dog after the Brazilian handed Leicester a way back into the game after getting caught trying to do a ‘Cruyff turn’ by the byline.

The new £65million man, who admitted he was “angry” at himself afterwards, gifted Rachid Ghezzal a goal after he was dispossessed by Kelechi Iheanacho in the Reds’ 2-1 win on Saturday.

Afterwards Schmeichel said that mistake have to be accepted when you employ a style in which the goalkeeper is encouraged to play out from the back.

“Of course you feel for him. He’s been fantastic in their first three games,” said Schmeichel.

“I don’t know Liverpool’s style exactly but I think they encourage the keeper to take chances to keep possession, like Ederson does for Manchester City .

“When you do that you have to accept mistakes are sometimes made, just as with outfield players. The only difference with goalkeepers is when you do make an error nine-and-a-half times out of 10 it gets punished.

“I do feel for him but you could see afterwards he didn’t take any chances again.”

Jurgen Klopp also alluded to the similar theory immediately after the game, but did conclude that the mistake was ultimately Alisson’s.

“We could have cleared the situation twice before and then we gave the ball back to them, but he could have cleared it away.

“He knows it, it was his mistake. we need to get used to it. We constantly get the ball to the keeper but the player needs to learn there are other solutions. Joe (Gomez) could have cleared the ball, Alisson could have too.

“That is how it is. He is a fantastic goalkeeper, and makes some fantastic saves. He didn’t do what he was supposed to but it’s all good.

“I told him that it was the best game to do it (the mistake) because we won it.

“It’s all fine now, but we should not always play all the balls to Alisson.”
