Keane disagrees with Solskjaer over Man Utd goalkeeping statement

Henderson Solskjaer TEAMtalk

Roy Keane does not agree with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and says the Manchester United boss now sees Dean Henderson as his No. 1 goalkeeper.

Henderson returned to the starting line-up for Sunday’s crucial 3-1 win at Tottenham after missing out in midweek. David de Gea had played against Granada in the Europa League, but Henderson has now played the last five Premier League games.

Former Sheffield United loanee Henderson, 24, looks to have established himself as Solskjaer’s main man. The Norwegian though refused to admit as much ahead of the game to Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves.

Asked about the pecking order, Solskjaer said: “Dean [Henderson] has had good momentum, he’s played really well so we carried on with him today,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

“David [De Gea] played well in Granada, kept a clean sheet, but he played – travel and everything. Dean had more of a rest so he’s in goal today.”

But former United captain Keane now believes Henderson disagreed with Solskjaer’s explanation and thinks Henderson is the main man.

“I wouldn’t agree with Ole,” Keane told Sky Sports. “I think he sees Dean Henderson as his No.1 now. He’s obviously given him a run of games.

“OK he played De Gea during the week which was a comfortable game.

Kane or Haaland - who is best fit for Man Utd?

Roy Keane discusses whether Manchester United should target Harry Kane or Erling Haaland during the summer transfer window.

“But he’s given Dean his trust now to play in the big games, he’s certainly going to give him until the end of the season, unless he has a complete disaster.

“So I think De Gea is under huge pressure now to try and get his position back in the team.”

De Gea, who is under contract until 2023, has been Solskjaer’s first choice for the majority of the season. It left Henderson playing in the cup competitions and waiting in the wings.

However, when De Gea returned to Spain for the birth of his child, Solskjaer put no timescale on the 30-year-old’s return.

In stepped Henderson and he has been immovable since.

Last week Solskjaer said: “David has had 10 fantastic years at Man United and he’s had challengers [before].

“Of course they want to play – Dean has given it his all because everyone wants that place in the team. David does as well and it’s a healthy competition.

“Goalkeeper departments are a very tightknit group. They work together in preparation, they have different gym sessions, individual sessions [to the rest of the squad], they stay together more. Naturally they create a bond and the spirit in the goalkeeping department has been top. But it’s a healthy competition.”

De Gea to move on?

De Gea’s omissions have led to the representatives of De Gea sourcing potential transfers for their client, according to a report.

Henderson’s arrival at Solskjaer’s apparent No.1 has seen doubt mount over De Gea’s future. Reports in last Sunday’s newspapers claimed that United want to rip up his contract by offering him a mammoth pay-off.

According to a fresh report from the Daily Mail, meanwhile, the stopper’s representatives are beginning the hunt for their client’s new club.

The newspaper reports that the agents are actively offering De Gea’s services to ‘Europe’s top clubs’.

De Gea does have at least two years to run on his huge £375,000 a week deal. There is also an option for the club to add another 12 months to that contract.
