Tottenham ‘keeping an eye’ on £50m Newcastle, Man Utd target as Levy prepares for squad revamp
Tottenham Hotspur scouts were reportedly ‘keeping a close eye’ on James Ward-Prowse in Southampton’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday.
The England international has earned a reputation as one of the best free-kick takers in the Premier League. Now, there are a host of clubs queuing up for his signature.
Indeed, Tottenham are not alone in their pursuit of Ward-Prowse, with Manchester United and Newcastle also interested in signing him this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Spurs scouts were at St. James’ Park on Sunday to watch Ward-Prowse, in a game where the Magpies delivered a heavy blow to Southampton’s survival hopes.
The Saints currently find themselves bottom of the Premier League table, six points adrift from safety, with just four games remaining.
As a result, they could be forced to sell some of their best players this summer. Ward-Prowse certainly fits into that category, and it’s unlikely he would want to play in the Championship.
Since joining Southampton in 2003, the midfielder has made over 400 appearances, scoring 86 goals in the process.

Spurs eye Ward-Prowse and Maddison
Similarly, Tottenham are preparing for a summer of change. Daniel Levy is currently on the hunt for a new manager as well as a new director of football. Also, the future of club record goal scorer Harry Kane is in doubt.
What’s certain, though, is that they need a squad revamp if they want to challenge for trophies again. This season, Spurs find themselves knocked out of all major competitions and sitting in sixth place in the Premier League table – nine points adrift from the top four.
With that in mind, Levy is looking to bring in several new additions this summer. Although, whoever he appoints as the club’s new manager will get the final say on prospective transfers.
Midfield seems to be an area Levy is focusing on, though. The likes of Oliver Skipp and Yves Bissouma have struggled to find consistent form this term, hence the need for reinforcements.
Ward-Prowse certainly has the quality to get into the Tottenham starting XI. However, with three Premier League clubs in the race, they could be forced to pay around £50m for his services.
Interestingly, Ward-Prowse isn’t the only Newcastle target Spurs are pushing for. Leicester City star James Maddison has also been heavily linked to both clubs, as well as Manchester United, so he will be another to watch in the transfer market.
The next few months will be hugely important for Tottenham. So, it will be interesting to see if Levy splashes the cash on Ward-Prowse ahead of next season.
