Mikel Arteta Arsenal TEAMtalk

Pundit Kevin Campbell says a deal for Arsenal to sign Kalidou Koulibaly would be “excellent” and would revolutionise their defence.

The Gunners have long been criticised for their defensive mishaps – and for signing the players responsible for them.

Critics have put David Luiz in the spotlight several times, including for his ill-fated cameo against Manchester City. The Brazilian came on and, within 25 minutes, cost his side victory and received a red card.

What’s more, Shkodran Mustafi has also received flak and Campbell recognises defence is the first port of call for Mikel Arteta in his Arsenal rebuild.

However, Campbell also thinks the Gunners need additions across the pitch to progress.

“Arsenal need four or five players across the board,” he told GentingBet (via the Daily Mirror). “They need centre-halves, I can see them going for one or two players in that position.

“They also need central midfielders, and more energy across the midfield and either another striker or a wide player.

“I could see three players coming to Arsenal, dependent on recruitment and transfer budget – I’m not sure what’s going to happen and I’m not sure who Arteta is looking at.”

Pressed on the players Arsenal could sign, Campbell named Koulibaly as an ideal recruit. The Napoli centre-back has established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A and Europe.

What’s more, Napoli president Aurelio di Laurentiis has confirmed that he could be sold before next season.

“I could take Thomas Partey in midfield, from Atletico Madrid and Adrien Rabiot from Juventus,” Campbell added.

“I’d love to see Kalidou Koulibaly at the back as Arsenal struggle with quick forwards and Koulibaly is quick and an excellent defender.

“That’s the position, especially after the north London derby, where we need someone who can cover ground pretty well.”

Arteta, meanwhile, has said that there must come a time for Arsenal to dig deep and provide sufficient transfer funds.
