Liverpool are beating Chelsea in the race to sign promising Exeter City youngster Ben Chrisene after inviting him to play for the club’s youth team, according to a report.

The 15-year-old became the youngest player to appear for Exeter when he made his debut in his side’s 4-1 defeat to Coventry City in the EFL Cup last month.

According to The Sun, Liverpool have had Chrisene on their radar for months but the fact that he has made his first-team debut has led to their interest in the player increasing.

The newspaper says that the Reds have invited the youngster to play in their youth side this weekend which is hoped will swing the chase for his signature more in their favour.

Chelsea are also keen with the report adding that boss Frank Lampard has contacted the player. Lampard’s interest is said to be rooted in the fact that Ethan Ampadu came through the ranks at Exeter before moving to West London.

Liverpool did not make any marquee signings during the summer and instead continued the development of their academy, bringing in Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott, both of whom have made one senior appearance so far.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s side sit eight points clear at the Premier League’s summit ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United and Virgil van Dijk has outlined why his side have nothing to lose in the title race.
