Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he may rest a key Liverpool star at the weekend, with a huge game against Manchester City on the horizon.
The table-topping Reds take on Aston Villa this weekend but with Fabinho just a booking away from a one-match ban, Klopp could lose his top defensive midfielder against City a week on Sunday if he does pick up a caution at Villa Park.
With that in mind the Anfield chief, speaking at his press conference ahead of the game, admits he has a decision to make over the Brazilian: “I don’t know yet. I will have to see. I know he is [one booking away]. No challenges at all!
“It is not possible against Villa to play without tackles. We know it. We have to deal with this information, either him or me with the lineups.”
Klopp has also added to the debate over whether there is too much football, as the busy festive period looms for every club, while the Reds also have to compete in the World Club Challenge.
He added: “People say ‘You need a bigger squad’ but the game is not made for a bigger squad of 40 players.
“You can’t send players on holiday and tell them not to come in until after Christmas. It’s a disbalance.
“The discussion is obvious that it is too much [football]. Let’s have a look how they deal with it. If you the schedule, it is all OK. End of Jan after busy Dec there are 2 semis. Why have two semi-final [legs]? We have FA Cup games at the weekend. No-one wants to touch it.”
“We wonder why the best players in the world cannot perform as good as they can for as long as they want.
“Two weeks off a year [not enough].”
