Jurgen Klopp has reportedly made personal contact with a Liverpool target as they aim to beat two Bundesliga giants to his signature.
Florian Neuhaus is the player in question, as Liverpool look to strengthen their midfield for next season.
Thiago Alcantara was supposed to do that this season, but has not lived up to expectations. And with Georginio Wijnaldum entering the final few months of his contract and Naby Keita also linked with an exit, Liverpool could need reinforcements.
Neuhaus emerged as a potential target earlier this month. He has been a standout player for Borussia Monchengladbach over the past few seasons.
The German star is expected to move on to a bigger club in the summer. Liverpool are apparently one of three main contenders.
According to Todofichajes, the Premier League champions are vying with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for Neuhaus.
In an effort to convince the player, Klopp has supposedly made direct contact with Neuhaus. It seems to have had the desired effect, with the 23-year-old keen on the idea of moving to Anfield.
However, Liverpool would still have to convince Gladbach into a sale. The German club have him under contract until 2024.
Hence, it could cost as much as €40m to prise Neuhaus away.
Liverpool also eyeing attacking signing
Midfield is not the only area Liverpool may be looking to strengthen for next season.
Their attackers have not been as prolific as usual this term, which has had an impact on their title defence. Next year, they may look to reinforce their frontline.
One of the names on their radar is a La Liga winger, who could cost as much as £55m.
However, if they can stump up that price, the player’s current club seem happy to allow the move.
