Klopp issues damning verdict on Thursday’s VAR night of shame

Klopp TEAMtalk

Jurgen Klopp has said he was left bewildered by the VAR decisions on Thursday night which left Jose Mourinho and Dean Smith furious.

Both Tottenham and Aston Villa were on the wrong end of VAR decisions, while Southampton were also handed a dubious penalty against Everton.

According to the BBC, the Premier League have admitted all Thursday’s VAR decisions from Stockley Park were wrong.

Bruno Fernandes won a spot-kick, which he scored in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, after colliding with Ezri Konsa.

Villa boss Smith alluded to referees not knowing the game, when he was asked his thoughts on Fernandes’ penalty call at Villa Park.

He branded it a “disgraceful decision” and said: “How someone in the studio who had the view I had only once can make that decision is beyond me. Five minutes after the game the 100 messages I’ve had from people who have watched it telling me it’s a disgraceful decision tells me my feelings were right.”

While Tottenham should have had a penalty for a blatant Joshua King shove on Harry Kane in a 0-0 draw with Bournemouth.

Klopp was asked if he was concerned about VAR not overruling referees.

He said: “Jose (Mourinho) had after-match interview where he said decision is made by a guy a long way away. I can 100% understand Dean Smith is struggling to accept what happened last night. I don’t know how it can happen.

“They they were all obvious [errors] but you have to ask the refs why they still stuck to their decisions from the match. It’s obviously difficult but it wasn’t too difficult last night and still not right. That is not good.

KLOPP ON MINAMINO

Takumi Minamino Liverpool TEAMtalk

“We have had decisions (not for us) but we won the game so nobody talked about them. But if three officials watch it, and two VAR watch it, they should find the right decision at the end.”

Klopp meanwhile had encouraging words for Takumi Minamino, who has not yet scored for the Reds since his £9m switch in January.

“In the game before, he was really unlucky twice he could have scored. It’s all good.

“Things just need time and we have a really strong football team, it’s not easy to come into this team, you just have to train really really hard and at high level and that is what Taki is doing.”
