Liverpool have reportedly joined the chase to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, who is also wanted by Tottenham, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Berge only joined the Blades in January 2020 for a fee of £22m, but looks destined to leave if relegation is confirmed in the coming weeks.

The Bramall Lane outfit are bottom of the table and parted company with boss Chris Wilder prior to their 5-0 thrashing at Leicester.

With a return to the Championship looking inevitable, the Blades are likely to lose some of their top talent.

Chief among that talent is Berge, who has been strongly tipped to head to Villa this summer.

North London rivals Spurs and Arsenal have, more recently, been tipped to join the race for his signature.

However, a report on Eurosport states that Jurgen Klopp has identified the midfielder as an affordable option to bolster his engine room.

The report claims that the Reds are ready to ‘join the pursuit’ for the 23-year-old, particularly given continuing doubts over Gini Wijnaldum’s future.

Berge has endured a frustrating season, having not featured since a defeat to Manchester United back in December.

The talented midfielder was forced to have surgery on a tendon late last year. However, he is hoping to return in the closing weeks of the campaign.

It would appear, at this stage, that Villa remain the favourites to bring in Berge. But they could have a battle on the hands if Liverpool do make a move.

Liverpool to sell stars to fund Haaland move

Meanwhile, Klopp is reportedly considering cashing on one or more of his famed front three to sign Erling Haaland.

Thirty-one goals in 30 games this season have propelled Haaland to the centre of transfer attention across Europe.

The Borussia Dortmund striker has potential suitors in the Premier League and could find a new club this summer.

The Manchester Evening News claims that the 20-year-old has become Manchester United’ top striker target this summer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are considering including a 2020 signing as part of a tempting player-plus-cash approach.

Liverpool lave largely been dismissed as contenders in the race for Haaland; their Fenway Sports Group (FSG) owners operate on a tight budget and only spend what they earn.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Reds could yet stake a strong claim to sign the striker.

The Spanish newspaper reports (via Sport Witness) that Klopp is considering selling one or more of his front three in a bid to raise funds.

Such an approach would fit in with FSG’s policy. What’s more, it would mirror Philippe Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona in 2018, which has more than paid its dividends.

Following the Brazilian’s sale, Liverpool brought in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, who have led Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League glory.

Mundo Deportivo adds that Klopp is looking to reinvigorate his team with a top new signing.

Reds trio at risk

The Athletic, meanwhile, adds that Liverpool will target a new forward regardless of where they finish in the Premier League this term.

As for who could go from the club’s front line, Mohamed Salah has met exit speculation this season. However, the Egyptian has maintained stellar form and has 25 goals this season.

Sadio Mane, meanwhile, has largely dropped off despite scoring in both legs of the Champions League win over RB Leipzig.

Finally, Roberto Firmino has failed to escape criticism for his lack of input with goals for some time.
