Jurgen Klopp says the financial muscle of Manchester United will help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sort out the problems at Old Trafford.
United’s 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City – a result Klopp expected – has left City top of the table by a point and United floundering in sixth place having lost seven of their last nine games in all competitions.
Asked by Norway TV whether Solskjaer could learn from Klopp in shaping United, the German boss was in jovial mood.
“They never helped me, why should I help him?” Klopp said laughing.
“It takes time. If we hadn’t had such an interesting ride in the Europa League I don’t think there would have been too many positives.
“I think the financial power of United is enough to sort the problems.”
United’s home defeat to Liverpool’s title rivals was a result which the bookies predicted, with the hosts as big as 7/1 to win – and Klopp says he expected a Man City victory.
“It was really the result I expected. I was calm,” said Klopp, who ruled out a transfer for Lorenzo Insigne.
“United tried whatever they can, in the first half especially, but in the 95 minutes it was clear they couldn’t withstand City in the moment.
“They were unlucky in moments but then they couldn’t withstand City.”
Asked about the chances of winning the title, with City now a point ahead with a superior goal difference, Klopp said: “There’s three games left. We want to win them.
“Huddersfield, Newcastle, Wolves. That’s the situation. That’s all there is to say. If we win it, we win it. If we don’t there are no regrets as long as we give our best.
“I’ve seen that all season. However the season ends up this is the first step. We are not finished, not the finished article. We will carry on, and we will see
“We have been together more than three-and-a-half years. It’s completely normal if you have the quality to do so.
“They are at the perfect age. They have a lot of space for improvement.
“You are not surprised anymore if you are good and not frustrated anymore if you’re not so good.”
“If we win the league it is the first step. That’s how it is. We start now. We started the season with this team so let’s carry on.”
