Klopp told Liverpool can stun Man City with huge deal better than Messi

Lionel Messi TEAMtalk

Wayne Rooney believes Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara will have a bigger impact than Manchester City securing a huge deal for Lionel Messi.

Thiago and Messi are allegedly strong targets for the Reds and Pep Guardiola’s side, respectively.

Liverpool are already well-stocked in midfield and Thiago could act as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is reportedly a target for new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman.

Messi, meanwhile, is in a bracket of his own. The 33-year-old has won six Ballon d’Or titles at Barca – as well as countless winners’ medals – and is an unprecedented signing for any club.

According to Rooney, however, Liverpool would be getting the better deal by bringing in Thiago.

“I think it is City or Liverpool [for the Premier League title],” the former Manchester United striker told talkSPORT.

“Chelsea are making a lot of signings, some good signings. Man United have a lot of potential in the players they have got but I still think they are a year away.

“Chelsea with the new signings will possibly need a year to get everyone on the same song sheet.

“So I do think it is between City and Liverpool. And if Liverpool get Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think it is done [the title]. That is a better signing than Messi going to Man City.”

LIVERPOOL, CITY CHASE BIG SIGNINGS

Liverpool have reportedly stalled on their interest in Thiago over the past few weeks. Bayern have set a price tag of £27million, a fee the Reds are unwilling to stretch to.

However, reports this week claim Anfield chiefs will shake off their financial concerns and press ahead.

City, meanwhile, are actively pursuing a deal for Messi. Guardiola has spoken to the Argentine after he told Barcelona he wants to leave.

Indeed, the latest report in The Times claims Guardiola told Messi that if he definitely was to leave Barca, he would make the forward a strong target.
