Liverpool are reported to have launched a £40million approach for Napoli star Amadou Diawara as Jurgen Klopp steps up plans to beef up his midfield options next season.
The Guinean midfielder has struggled for first-team action so far this season, with Maurizio Sarri largely preferring to select Jorginho in the defensive midfield role.
The Reds are among “four or five Premier League clubs to have made an approach for Italy international Jorginho” this summer according to player’s agent, but sources in the Italian media reckon a deal for Diawara looks a lot more palatable for Napoli.
According to Calciomercato, Napoli could be more susceptible to an approach for the Guinean – with Liverpool suggested to have already launched an enquiry to see if the Serie A giants would consider selling the £40m-rated star.
The swoop could appeal to Liverpool given they have already concluded a summer deal for his compatriot Naby Keita, who will move to Anfield from RB Leipzig.
Tottenham, however, are also keen on Diawara and cannot be discounted either. Mauricio Pochettino considered signing the midfielder in the summer of 2016 when the player first rose to prominence at Bologna.
Still only 20, the defensive midfielder has been regularly monitored by Spurs’ scouts and could be seen as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele, who be set to quit north London this summer.
Meanwhile, Diawara might not be the only Napoli star set to move to Liverpool this summer. According to reports, Jurgen Klopp’s side have launched a late attempt to lure goalkeeper Pepe Reina back to Anfield, though the Spanish star is still expected to sign for AC Milan for whom he has already agreed personal terms.
