Joe Gomez TEAMtalk

Liverpool are set to reward Joe Gomez’s emergence as one of the finest young defenders in the Premier League with a new and improved contract.

The England defender still has three-and-a-half-years left on his current Reds deal, so there is no urgency to rush into any new terms on either side, but Liverpool are keen to recognise a player Jurgen Klopp has identified as “the future of Liverpool“.

Negotiations are ongoing, and chiefs at Anfield are increasingly confident the 21-year-old will commit his long-term future on significantly improved terms within months, if not weeks.

Klopp is eager to ensure all of the Reds’ best young players commit their future to the club on big money deals, to ensure there is a nucleus of young talent at the club, and Gomez is at the forefront of that movement.

Speaking recently about the England star, he said: “He has a big future here at Liverpool, no doubt about that. Joe is a very important part of the squad and it’s so nice to see.

“I remember when I came in and everybody told me about him.

“Now, seeing him full of confidence, and being really fit, I know what they were talking about when they told me how good he was and, much more importantly, how good he is.

“I knew him, but not really well, and everybody told me how good he was when he came to Liverpool. Then he got the injury and he has had to fight back.

“It took a while, but he has shown so much determination.”

Gomez is understandably happy at Anfield and has indicated his desire to extend his contract, after forging a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk – a player Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville claims is in the top five Prem players – so is the perfect player for the defender to gain experience with.
