Klopp provides Thiago to Liverpool update; hints at Wijnaldum decision

Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp gave an update when quizzed about the ongoing Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool speculation, and hinted that a resolution could be close regarding Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract situation.

The Reds are set to kick off their Premier League title defence when they host newly-promoted Leeds United on Saturday.

But with the transfer window still open, a number of key questions still remain surrounding elements of Klopp’s squad ahead of the new season.

The most prominent regards the continued speculation over Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago.

The Spaniard, 29, has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, and the latest report suggested Liverpool had launched their first offer.

Speaking in his Friday press conference, Klopp provided an update on the situation, and also clarified their stance regarding Rhian Brewster’s potential exit.

“If I would invent words that would end speculation I would become rich,” Klopp said regarding the Thiago rumours.

Thiago TEAMtalk

“Did I mention that Thiago is a really good player? It’s nice we’re linked but that is pretty much it.

“Good player linked to a big club, that is nice. All that I can say on it.”

On young forward Brewster – who has been linked with both loan and permanent exits – Klopp said: “Nothing to say, wonderful kid, big talent. The decision about the squad are just not finished yet. We don’t have to yet.

“We are really with him and we think about his development. How we can use him. So there’s nothing to say. Loans etc, nothing decided”

Wijnaldum resolution close?

Wijnaldum TEAMtalk

Midfield linchpin Wijnaldum has become one of Liverpool’s most critical players in recent years.

But with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, speculation over an exit to link up with fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman at Barcelona has emerged.

However, Klopp cut a relaxed figure when asked for an update on the situation, stating that everything was “absolutely fine.”

“Since Gini is here I’ve had 500 talks with him,” Klopp said. “Nothing else to say about that. That is all really.”

When pushed for further comment regarding the Dutchman, Klopp added: “All good with Gini? Yes. Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved in that. All good for the moment.

“Between me, Gini and the club, it is all completely fine. Apart from anything to announce to [the media].”

Meanwhile, details of Liverpool’s “imminent” mvoe for a talented German have been revealed.
