Klopp hints Thiago could play major Liverpool role against Arsenal

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says Thiago Alcantara is “in contention” to start Monday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

Thiago made his Premier League debut in last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Chelsea. The Spaniard came on for the injured Jordan Henderson and impressed, completing 75 passes in 45 minutes.

But with a wealth of midfield options now at his disposal, Klopp remains unsure of the role Thiago will play against the Gunners.

“We will see, we have a few days to train,” he told reporters at Friday’s pre-match press conference. “Some of the boys have to recover from last night, so we will see how we set up against Arsenal.

“I have an idea but why should I make the decision today when we have time until Monday? But he’s in, he’s in contention. So let’s see.”

Klopp also confirmed that Joe Gomez will return to training on Friday. The England international missed out last weekend due to a muscle issue.

His fellow centre-back Joel Matip, meanwhile, will remain absent with his injury. Captain Jordan Henderson is also unfit but is closing in on a return.

Liverpool head into Monday’s clash with Arsenal after struggling in recent matches between the sides.

The Gunners have won both previous meetings – August’s Community Shield clash and a Premier League fixture in July.

Klopp was keen to praise Mikel Arteta for the way he has constructed his team since arriving in north London.

“Mikel Arteta showed in a pretty short period of time that he seems to be an exceptional football manager. The structure of the team he sets up now is really good,” Klopp said.

“You can see the balance between defence and offence is really good. Good organisation but freedom for the players as well, using players in the right positions.

“Since he’s there he did a pretty impressive job and changed the mood in the whole club.”

Both sides have begun their Premier League campaigns with back-to-back wins.
