Kylian Mbappe is close to signing a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain rather than joining Real Madrid, according to a respected reporter.
Mbappe is out of contract with PSG at the end of the season. It has prompted much speculation about his future after he tried to leave last year. Ultimately, Real Madrid missed out – and they may do so again this time around.
It had been thought that the French forward was close to agreeing a move to Madrid. In fact, some believed all that was missing was his signature.
A decision will be announced soon, with Mbappe promising it will come before he links up with the France squad for international duty in June.
It has since been anticipated that he may even let the world know where he will be playing next season by the end of this week.
Yet there has still been a lack of clarity over what that decision will be. As ESPN reporter Julien Laurens put it on Friday, “PSG think he is going to Madrid and Real think he is staying in Paris.”
But in the hours since those comments from the French football expert, there has been a significant update from Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio.
Writing on his website, the Sky journalist claims Mbappe is “surprisingly” close to extending his PSG contract. Di Marzio describes the situation as having “changed radically”.
According to his report, Mbappe has been tempted by PSG’s counter offer of a new contract. What’s more, some members of his family have been persuading him to stay in his hometown of Paris.
Kylian Mbappe announcement coming soon
Kylian Mbappe has had positive talks with Real Madrid but will announce his future soon
Therefore, it now looks more likely he will stick around with the Ligue 1 champions.
As summarised by Foot Mercato, Mbappe now has agreements in principle with Real Madrid and PSG. He just needs to pick which contract to sign.
PSG have their final game of the season on Saturday, with Mbappe set to announce his decision either before or after the game.
Mbappe could tick off big achievements with PSG
To date, he has given them five seasons of service. Within that time, he has contributed 168 goals and 87 assists from 216 appearances.
PSG’s record scorer of all time is Edinson Cavani, whose tally was 200. By staying for a couple more years, Mbappe could set a new high.
He would also be hoping to help PSG to their long-desired goal of winning the Champions League. That medal is not yet in his collection, whereas he has won 11 other honours with the club.
Moving to Madrid may have given him a good chance of competing for Europe’s ultimate prize. But PSG – finalists in 2020 – have their own ambitions and keeping the World Cup winner would help.
Still only 23, there would be time for Mbappe to move to Madrid in the future. In the meantime, it would be interesting to see what else he could achieve in Paris.
As Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently acknowledged, any club in the world would welcome Mbappe. Therefore, if PSG can convince him to stay, it would be a huge decision from the forward.
