Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe says he will make a public announcement about his future next month after saying a decision is “almost done.”
The France striker will become a free agent in July with his contract expiring in the French capital. PSG though are desperate to get the 23-year-old to commit to another deal in Ligue 1.
Talks between Mbappe’s mother and the club took place in Doha last month. And the French champions had not given up hope on trying to keep the player, despite a widespread assumption he would join Real Madrid.
Mbappe’s mother Fayza Lamari met with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi in Qatar and The Telegraph claim the meeting went well.
It is understood they proposed a two-year deal, possibly with a break clause at the end of next season. However, Real Madrid have apparently offered to make Mbappe their highest paid player ever.
Liverpool have also been mentioned as suitors for the player, who will reveal all before he joins up with France early next month.
“It will be known very soon, it’s almost done,” Mbappe said. “My decision is made, yes, almost. Why was I so slow? You have to respect all parties.
“I know that people expected a lot from me. That’s normal. I’m in a hurry too. But it’s not only about me. But here it is, it’s finished right now, there are just some details left.
“I will officially announce my decision on the future before I join the France national team in June.”
Contract extension talks
Mbappe has openly admitted he would like to play for Los Blancos in the past.
But PSG were encouraged last month when Mbappe spoke about there being “new elements” to his future.
“If I had made my decision, I would have said so,” Mbappe said in April. “I don’t have to answer to anyone. If I had made the decision, I would have taken responsibility. The good and the bad things, I have always assumed them by the way.”
Real Madrid failed with two bid of around €160m and €180m for Mbappe last summer. PSG turned down the approaches even though they knew they risked losing him for free this summer.
Mbappe has helped them to win a record 10th French title, but Marca report the player is heading to Spain.
Kylian Mbappe agreement sealed, claims report
They report that Real Madrid reached a “total agreement” with Mbappe last week when he was in Madrid.
The striker took a trip to Madrid with PSG team-mate Achraf Hakimi during some time off last week. And the player “sealed everything that was talked about in recent months”.
Real will now stay silent until Mbappe’s announcement.
After being named the Players’ Player of the Year in France for the third year in a row, Mbappe said: “It’s always a huge pleasure being here.
“It’s an honor, which is why I insisted on coming. Winning for a third consecutive time is incredible.
“I want to thank PSG, my team-mates, my coach, and all those people working behind the scenes.
“We are proud of our tenth title. This year, more than ever before, I felt recognition and admiration. Thank you all. I will continue my story. I’m never satisfied.”
