La Liga outfit set to beat Newcastle to shock Wilshere signing

Jack Wilshere is reportedly close to agreeing terms on a shock January move to Spain with Real Betis.

The midfielder is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season and, with the club undecided on whether to offer him a new deal, is able to discuss a free transfer overseas from January 1.

Besiktas had been credited with an interest in Wilshere, while Rafa Benitez was reportedly exploring the possibility of extending the player’s time in the Premier League with a move to Newcastle.

However, The Sun say Wilshere could be set for a new challenge over in La Liga, with the player reportedly keen to make the move and giving the Spanish side encouragement over a possible deal.

The paper claims Betis  – who are currently eighth in La Liga – could even push through a deal in January if relations between Wilshere and Arsene Wenger plummet before then.

Wilshere has played just 25 minutes of Premier League action so far, which has cost him his place in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.

But pundit Ryan Giggs thinks the Arsenal man warrants a place in the international fold as he told ITV Football after England’s 0-0 draw with Brazil: “To compete at the top, you need to keep the ball.

“And probably the best [English] midfielder who keeps the ball is Jack Wilshere.

“Now, he needs to play.

“But in a game like that, you can give Wilshere the ball and he will get yourselves out of trouble, just like the Brazilians did when England pressed.

“So yeah; defensively very good, clean sheet.

“But to progress, you need to keep the ball.”
