Lampard makes honest admission with concrete Giroud update

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has confirmed that Olivier Giroud’s agent has spoken to the club about the French striker’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Speculation surrounding Giroud has increased in the last few days with Inter Milan said to be closing in on a deal to take him to the Serie A.

Lampard and his assistant Jody Morris have previously been insistent that Giroud will only be allowed to leave if it is for the “benefit” of the club, with another striker ideally being recruited before letting him leave.

However, asked in Friday’s press conference if his side need to plan ahead, Lampard said: “Not necessarily.

“With Ollie the situation is, if it’s right for everybody, and first and foremost that’s us as the club, then we’ll look at whether he can leave the club.

“He’s been a great professional here, who has continued to train professionally without many opportunities. But I still have to make a decision for the football club, and nothing’s done yet.

“Everyone’s talking about it so I’m not going to beat around the bush. I think his agent has spoken to the club, but until anything’s done he’s a Chelsea player.”

Should Giroud leave without Chelsea signing a replacement then the Blues would have just Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi as recognised senior strikers.

“There are a lot of things in football and the squad that are a risk, otherwise you would line up three or four of the best players in each position,” said Lampard.

“We have some adaptable players in our team who could take up different roles, so that would have to come into my thinking at that point.

“That’s my job, I’m going into it now. I have to make those decisions as I go along.

“I also have to think about the make-up of the squad, the spirit of the squad and I also have a human level where I look at people and players, how they are, how they train and how the squad could be affected in lots of different ways.

“Ollie (Giroud) has been great as well and I respect him for that, and that slightly comes into my thinking as well.

“The club will always come first. If I feel the decision to keep everybody in the January window, that will be my decision too.

“Nothing is done yet so we can probably broach these questions if and when something is done.

“Everyone’s talking about it (a possible Giroud transfer) so I’m not going to beat around the bush. I think his agent has spoken to the club, but until anything’s done he’s a Chelsea player.”

Elsewhere, Lampard confirmed that defender Andreas Christiensen will not be leaving the club this month after reports linked him with a move away.

“Yes, I can rule that out. I like Andreas as a player, I want him to be all the things I think he can play,” Lampard said.

“The reality is we have competition here, I have to choose on what I see. I want to work on all the parts that we can improve.

“I think those bits in his game can really be the fantastic player that he can be. He gets misjudged on age at times.”

On Christian Pulisic, Lampard said: “He was injured in training the day before Nottingham Forest, it’s an injury to his adductor, a tendon injury.

“It’s disappointing for us. We’ll have to see how quickly he recovers as it’s a nasty injury, he was in pain at the time.”
