Almost five months on from his sacking by Chelsea, Frank Lampard has revealed he is planning to return to management at some point in the future.

Lampard was relieved of his duties 18 months into his time as Blues boss. He led them to a fourth place finish in 2019/20, as well as an FA Cup final. However, after a difficult first half of the following season, Lampard was sacked in January.

Chelsea were ninth in the Premier League at the time of his departure. Although, they had progressed to the knock-out stages of the Champions League and into the fifth round of the FA Cup. Therefore, some felt the decision to remove him from his post was a harsh one.

But the tough reality of management hasn’t dissuaded the former England international from looking for more coaching jobs.

Asked about his hopes for the future while working as a pundit for the BBC during the Euros, Lampard said: “I’m certainly not put off, I love the job, I love the challenge of it.

“I had two great experiences at Derby and then at Chelsea. I would love to get back in at the right time and the right moment.”

Lampard ‘proud’ of Chelsea efforts

At the time of his appointment, questions were asked  about how equipped he was for such a big job. Lampard had just one year of professional management under his belt at the time he was put in charge of Chelsea.

Ultimately, his shortcomings saw his time in the Stamford Bridge hotseat come to an early end. But Lampard feels he did a good job considering the challenges he faced. Not least his focus on giving young players, who are now thriving for both club and country, a chance.

“With reflection, I’ve had a few months out now and it was quite nice actually to spend some time out of the game, I’m pretty proud of the job I did. It was an honour to manage the club.

“I came in at a tough time with the [transfer] ban and the loss of Eden Hazard and worked really hard in year one to get into the Champions League.

Mason [Mount] and people like that, developing the younger players was a huge deal to me so I’m happy.

“You don’t want to lose your job, but it was a huge experience for me.”
