Neymar: Document reveals salary is dwarved by Lionel Messi's

The contract Neymar allegedly signed when joining Barcelona from Sao Paulo in 2013 has been revealed by the website FootballLeaks.

A 13-page document shared by the site appears to show the player earns a comparatively modest weekly wage of £77,000.

But tellingly, for any club wishing to sign the Brazil striker from Barcelona, the document also reveals the player’s release clause is set at an eye-watering €190million (£152million). The striker was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, with officials at the club reportedly willing to meet the player’s buy-out clause.

Neymar's Barcelona contract

The leaked document also discredits claims that Barcelona had a pre-contract agreement in place with Sao Paulo to sign the player prior to his move to the Nou Camp.

It also suggests that Neymar, the 2015 Fifa Ballon d’Or runner-up who has twice been named by SportsPro as the most marketable athlete in the world, earns a basic salary of €5million-a-year.

This breaks down to a weekly fee of £77k per week, which is substantially less than the salaries of many other elite players.

Neymar’s team-mate Lionel Messi is believed to earn almost four times that amount with a basic weekly wage of £275,000, while Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is thought to earn in the region of £288,000 after tax.

Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, is believed to earn around £230,000 a week at Manchester United.
