Leeds decide against signing long-term £4.5m striker target

Leeds United are not expected to take up their option to sign Carpi forward Jerry Mbakogu.

Leeds have been interested in the striker since January, when they agreed an option to sign him in the current transfer window.

However, that option expires in five days time, on June 30, so it looks like Marcelo Bielsa has decided against moving for Mbakogu.

The 25-year-old Nigerian has been described as ‘the new Didier Drogba’ by his agent, but managed just six goals in 26 Serie B appearances in 2017-18.

Reports earlier in the year claimed that Leeds would present a £4.5m offer to Carpi, who reached the Serie B play-offs last season but missed out on promotion to the top flight.

Leeds are in the hunt for a new striker this summer, but it is understood that Bielsa would rather sign Derby’s Matej Vydra – who would cost £11m – or free agent Abel Hernandez.

The 62-year-old coach was appointed as new Leeds manager this month after a distinguished career with the likes of Argentina, Chile and Marseille.
