Leeds fear Man Utd swoop for star man as report names three players Whites will ‘try damndest to keep’ if they suffer relegation
Leeds United are fearful they will lose one of their few bright sparks this season in Tyler Adams in the event of relegation, with Manchester United among the clubs keeping tabs on the American.
The Whites are currently clinging on to their Premier League status by the narrowest of threads. They have slipped to 19th in the table after failing to win in nine games. And their relegation fate looks likely to be sealed on Sunday on what is sure to be a dramatic final day.
In order to stay up, Leeds need to beat Tottenham at Elland Road and hope other results go their way elsewhere. And should Everton lose to Bournemouth and Leicester drop points at home to West Ham, then the survival door could open up for Leeds. However, their chances look slim at best!
As a result, speculation has already begun to surface over which players will jump ship at the end of the season.
Indeed, Marc Roca has already been linked with a return to LaLiga, while Illan Meslier and Willy Gnonto have found themselves the subject of intense speculation.
However, reports on Thursday claim Manchester United are hovering over a potential swoop for Adams.
The American has enjoyed an excellent season on a personal level for Leeds. And while the club will likely abandon their Player of the Season awards in light of their struggles, the midfielder would surely be the winner hands-down.
Missing with injury since mid-March, Adams has been a major loss for the Whites during the run-in.
We revealed back way back in October that Erik ten Hag and his staff were keeping tabs on the Leeds star.
Leeds keen to keep Man Utd target Adams and two other stars
Now Football Insider claims Leeds fear they have no chance of keeping Adams if they suffer relegation.
And they claim that a plethora of clubs are keen to prise the 24-year-old New Yorker away from Elland Road this summer.
Among them are the Red Devils, who famously plundered Leeds for Alan Smith the last time they went down in 2004.
Leeds paid £20m to RB Leipzig for Adams and he has undoubtedly proved a rare bright spark in a tough season.
The Whites, though, could likely expect to double their money for him were any club to make a firm approach. His tackles, interceptions and protection of the defence has been a big factor for Leeds this season.
And there will be no shortage of takers for him in the likely event of Leeds suffering relegation.
Despite Leeds’ precarious position, the club reportedly still hope to convince Adams to stay.
Per a report, Leeds United hope to persuade three of their big-name stars to stay at the club even if they go down.
Leeds keen to keep Wober, Adams and Gnonto
With Adams among them, the Whites will also hope to persuade other 2022/23 signings Maximilian Wober and Gnonto to stay put.
Per The Athletic, the trio are all seen as intrinsic to any Leeds push to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Of course, asking them to stay and persuading them to stay are two different matters entirely.
Talking Wober specifically – a £11m January signing from RB Salzburg – the YEP’s Graham Smyth said Leeds’ plans are clear.
“Leeds say that in the event of relegation they will try their damndest to keep the likes of Tyler Adams, Willy Gnonto and Max Wober. Wober is one I could see staying on, bringing leadership and quality to the back line.”
Despite Leeds’ struggles, Wober brings organisation to their backline and is seen as Liam Cooper’s successor.
Gnonto, meanwhile, has struggled to match his early season promise. The Italy forward is now reportedly on the radar of a string of Serie A clubs.
