Leeds are reported to be closing on a transfer agreement to sign Udinese midfielder Rodrigo de Paul after holding positive talks.
The Whites are preparing for their return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
Rodrigo Moreno and Robin Koch have arrived at Elland Road over the weekend, as Leeds strengthen their squad.
Now, they have turned their attention to another high-profile player. According to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and Phil Hay of The Athletic, Leeds are strongly considering a move for De Paul.
De Paul has been a consistent performer for Udinese over the past four seasons, becoming their vice-captain. However, he could call time on his spell in Serie A this summer.
As per reports, Leeds officials held talks with Udinese owner Gino Pozzo over the weekend.
Pozzo is reported to have told Leeds that there will be no discount on De Paul’s asking price and the €35m (£31m) fee will remain.
However, that appears to not be an issue for Leeds. As such, Gianluca Di Marzio claims Leeds are hopeful of reaching a ‘final agreement’ in the coming days.
The deal would represent another transfer record for Leeds. They already broke that over the weekend by sanctioning the initial £26.7m deal for Spain striker Rodrigo.
De Paul, were the deal to go through, would represent another significant coup for Leeds.
Marcelo Bielsa is reported to have identified his countryman who can significantly strengthen Leeds.
De Paul can play as either a winger or more centrally in midfield, which fits the type of player Leeds are still looking for.
The player has 17 caps for Argentina, but is thought to be seeking a fresh challenge.
De Paul has 25 goals and 25 assists to his name from 146 appearances for Udinese. He provided seven goals and six assists from 35 games last season.
Leeds had been pushing to sign Ryan Kent from Rangers to fill the attacking midfield role. However, they have not made a second bid, suggesting they have turned their attention to the more experienced De Paul.
Spanish expert predicts number of goals Rodrigo will score
Spanish football expert Graham Hunter, meanwhile, has predicted how many goals Rodrigo will net for United.
Following the deal, Hunter gave his verdict on how he thinks Moreno will do in the Premier League.
He wrote on Twitter: “If Bielsa plays Rodrigo as @LUFC main striker I’d be taking 10+ goals. If he’s wide or support I’d be less sure. My feeling is 13-15 Prem goals – lovely guy, hope he has fun.”
